On March 29, 2023, the Think Tank Network on the Eastern Partnership held an event in Brussels called "Russia’s War against Ukraine: Navigating the New Reality in the EU Eastern Neighbourhood", in which S. Chekunova, a leading expert of Razumkov Centre's energy and infrastructure programmes, took part.
The event was organized by the think tank German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP, Germany) and the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR) in partnership with the Stockholm Centre for East European Studies (SCEEUS).
Prominent politicians, representatives of national think tanks, senior officials of the European Commission Katarína Mathernová (DG NEAR) and Luc Pierre Devigne (EEAS) discussed the future expansion of the EU and the lines of updating the Eastern Partnership policy in the conditions of Russia's war against Ukraine.
During the discussions, the participants expressed the opinion that the recovery and post-war transformation of Ukraine into a more democratic, European country, with a "green" economy and a strong security system, energy markets integrated with European ones, should be synchronized with the EU enlargement processes.
The new Eastern European policy must necessarily be built on the success of Ukraine in the context of maximum support for it and bringing the Russian Federation to account. According to the participants, disruption of supply chains and energy diversification, the global battle of narratives, inefficient sanctions and the threat to the future of democracy remain the main challenges.
