After the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine (1991) and adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine (1996), formalisation of the irreversibility of Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic endeavour in the Constitution (2019) became the third important event in the constitutional development of Ukraine, argued Razumkov Centre’s Research Fellow on Legal Issues, retired judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Ph.D. (Law) Petro Stetsiuk at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "International Legal Assessment of Russian Military Aggression in Ukraine and Protection of Fundamental Human Rights." According to the expert, preservation of Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic course in present-day conditions is one of the main guarantees of protection of human rights and freedoms in Ukraine.
The event was organised by Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University together with the Association of Ukrainian Lawyers and the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland). Known national and foreign legal scholars, spin doctors, international experts, judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the Supreme Court, Ukrainian MPs, independent experts took part in the conference. Presentations by Volodymyr Vasylenko (Professor of the Department of International and European Law of the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy") "Specific features of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine and the international legal responsibility of the aggressor state" and Mykola Hnatovskyi (Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Associate Professor of the Department of International Law, Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University) "Role of international and national judicial bodies during the armed conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine" set the tone of the conference.
