According to UkrStat (the State Statistics Service of Ukraine), the Russian Federation became the largest investor in Ukraine’s economy in 2018.
Previously investments from Russia hid behind formats and activity areas that did not reveal the origin of these investments. Today, cooperation via certain legal entities and individuals is complicated by sanctions. The offshore business lost its dynamics. As a result, the situation becomes more consistent with reality. In addition, the risk of military escalation remains high with no sign of conflict resolution in view. Second, there is some disappointment with the lack of progress in improving the country’s investment climate. As a result, only investors that are accustomed to such environment may work here, and this is true for Russians. Also, the UkrStat indicators can point at reduced activity of foreign investors other than Russians.
