A series of events that took place in the middle of the year indicate that Europe is undergoing a slow process of rethinking not the ratio and raison d'être, but the modus operandi of states, interstate and supranational entities in conditions when the war in Europe is no longer possible to ignore, when hope for allied support from the United States is no longer guaranteed. 

West European countries appeared not prepared for the aggravation of relations with the US or a series of outbreaks of national egoism among themselves, which called into question both the celebrated transatlantic unity and the ability of the EU and European NATO allies to act as a cohesive whole.
