On 4 February, 2022 S.Chekunova and V.Omelchenko, representatives of the Energy and Infrastructure Programmes of the Razumkov Centre, held a professional online discussion with experts of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on “Problems of the current model of electricity market in Ukraine and synchronization of the ECO with ENTSO-E”.
During the discussion, experts from the Razumkov Centre analyzed in detail features of the new model of the electricity market, that has been in operation since July 2019. This model, along with certain advantages, also has a number of disadvantages that hinder the adaptation of the Ukrainian market to the current EU rules and is unfavorable for attracting investment in infrastructure development.
Significant attention was paid to Ukraine’s plans to synchronize the Integrated Power System with ENTSO-E. S.Chekunova and V.Omelchenko noted that NPC “Ukrenergo” together with other key energy companies of Ukraine with the support of international partners have completed a large amount of technical work to ensure that such synchronization is accomplished out in 2023. However, in order to achieve the full effect of this project, it is necessary to improve the market model so that it is in line with Ukraine's obligations under the framework of the Treaty establishing the Energy and the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
In turn, OECD representatives told about their plans to implement a project to analyze the Ukrainian electricity market and wished to deepen cooperation with the Razumkov Centre in the energy sector.
