Invaders attack the nodes connecting generating capacities with the power grid

October 23, 2022

The Russian armed forces attack the nodes that connect various generating capacities with Ukraine’s energy system, trying to destroy the link between the capacities and the electricity transmission network.

Maksym Bielawski, the leading expert of energy programmes at Razumkov Centre, said this in the "Naspravdi" programme.

"Russian energy engineers actually help the Russian military to attack critical infrastructure facilities, causing a humanitarian disaster. The enemy targets the nodes and equipment that connect different types of generating capacities with the energy system of Ukraine in order to destroy this connection between the capacities and the network through which electricity is transmitted," said Bielawski.

According to him, such damage occurred mainly at thermal generation facilities. In his opinion, the Russians in this way seek to undermine the regulating capacity of Ukraine's energy system.

"That is, in fact, they are trying to deprive Ukraine's energy system of the opportunity to respond to demand when industrial enterprises or consumers wish to increase electricity consumption," Bielawski explained.

At the same time, he noted, the nodal connections between nuclear generation and the power system are also damaged. Most likely, the expert noted, the goal of these actions is to cut the Ukrainian energy system from the base power generated by nuclear power plants.

"In this way, the enemy tried to hinder stable operation of nuclear power plants and possibly provoke an emergency situation. But he did not succeed," the expert emphasised.
