There are signs of Ukraine seizing the initiative — expert

August 15, 2022

Many experts note the beginning of the next phase of the war, and there are signs that the Ukrainian side is seizing the initiative. Oleksiy Melnyk, co-director of foreign policy and international security programmes of Razumkov Centre, spoke about it today, on August 12, during the "Ukraine Speaks" marathon on "Dom" and UA TV channels.

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to impose the initiative, and Russia is forced to react. But I would not rush to draw final conclusions yet, although I share this opinion. There are alphabetical, or elementary rules, saying that the enemy should never be underestimated," the expert noted.

According to him, we still need to be prepared for unpleasant surprises from the Russians.

"Although it should be noted that their opportunities to surprise us are very limited, especially after the strikes deep in their rear," Melnyk added.

The expert also notes that by intensive actions near Bakhmut in the east, Russia aims to bind as many [Ukrainian] troops as possible.

"Of course, to cause damage, but also to bind the Ukrainian forces as much as possible, because according to many observers, the main events will develop in the south of Ukraine. So, Russia wishes to utmost weaken the grouping of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as they seem to prepare a serious trouble for Russia in the south," Mr. Melnyk said.
