This decision conveys two signals. First of all, the aggressor is looking for any possible ways to revive its economy and reduce the rate of rouble’s devaluation. Second, the introduction of such payment terms will accelerate the refusal of Central European countries from Russian gas. This will reduce revenue from its sale and, accordingly, limit funds to support the occupying army. Moreover, even if there was a practical transition to payment for Russian gas in roubles, it would be the first step towards dismantling the model of long-term contracts that Gazprom has always fought for. Therefore, such statements rather pursue geopolitical goals — to set their own agenda on the eve of the US President’s visit to Warsaw.
