Under the research conducted by the Razumkov Centre’s Sociological Service in cooperation with Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation in December 2017, the respondents were asked the question: which of the following concepts they associate with either Ukraine or Russia: “democracy”, “welfare”, “stability”, “freedom”, “aggression”, “humanism”, “justice”, “cruelty”, “dictatorship”, “respect for the individual’s rights”.
Respondents mostly associate Ukraine with the concepts of “democracy” (42%), freedom (40%) and “humanism” (36%). However, with regard to the concept of “humanism” the same number of respondents (35%) do not associate it with either Ukraine, or Russia. Only 2% of respondents associate the concept of “democracy”, only 3% — the concept of “humanism”, 4% — the concepts of “freedom”, “justice” and “respect for the individual’s rights” with Russia.
First of all, the respondents associate with Ukraine rather than with Russia the concept of “justice” (25%) and “respect for the individual’s rights” (21%). A relative majority (47%) do not associate these concepts with any of two countries. More than half of the respondents (51%) do not associate the concept of “welfare” with Ukraine or Russia (18% associate it primarily with Ukraine, and 9% with Russia). 55% of the respondents do not associate the concept of “stability” with either Ukraine or Russia (12% associate it firstly with Ukraine, than with Russia).
The respondents associate Russia with the concepts of “aggression” (66%), “dictatorship” (60%), and “cruelty” (57%). Abovementioned concepts were associated with Ukraine by only 3%, 4% and 3% of respondents respectively.
Among ethnic Ukrainians 68% associate the concept of “aggression” primarily with Russia, 2% — with Ukraine. Among ethnic Russians-citizens of Ukraine — 42% and 9% respectively. Among the ethnic Ukrainians, the concept of “cruelty” is associated with Russia by 59% of respondents, with Ukraine — 3%. Among ethnic Russians — 33% and 10% respectively. 62% of ethnic Ukrainians associate the concept of “dictatorship” with Russia, 4% — with Ukraine, ethnic Russians-citizens of Ukraine — 39% and 12% respectively.

The research was conducted by the Razumkov Centre’s Sociological Service in cooperation with Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation during December 15–19, 2017 in all the regions of Ukraine, except from Crimea and occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It was surveyed 2004 respondents above 18 years old. The statistical deviations does not exceed 2,3%.
